wanna take a little trip to santa barbara with me ... if so, let me know i'm going next saturday to see this amazingness.
proximity theatre company is a beautiful forum, started moons ago by my marvelous friends kyra & ken , with a dedicated vision telling stories which expose the human heart.
their mission: inspire people to connect with their bodies, themselves, and each other by vigorously exploring how alive you can be in your own skin.
kyra and i have always had a bond that is very hard to explain. although, we have dissimilar personalities, our mutual respect and admiration has no boundaries.
first time we met, instant connection. I was training her at this very fancy-schmancy french restaurant - she was hysterical! upbeat, funny and she kept tripping on the freshly-slicked hardwood floor. i came to realize that a lot of this was due to a slight overcompensation of one side of her body.
"hmmmm, i think she has a limp," i thought to myself. from thereon out, i was enthralled and absorbed with her story. eventually, she revealed at the age of 12 she had spinal surgery, and was deemed paralyzed from the neck down. kyra being kyra, she took this as a challenge - and showed us all how miraculous the human determination and heart when faced with such obstacles.
the reason i am sharing this is because she just recently decided to direct and choreograph her own "story" and called it chaos. she has been struggling almost her entire life to discover somatic connections within her own body through curiosity, vulnerability, and fearlessness. ken, her amazing partner, worked on a profound original score that brought me to tears most of the show.
thank you kyra & ken for being so raw and real with us, i know it was a scary endeavor, but it was a stunning and graceful performance.
